The Unruly Boss Popcaan surprised fans by announcing his purchase of a house in Ghana.
Four days into his New Year’s vacation to the African country, the Vanquish singer joins the list of celebrities who have put their money where their mouth is. In the past and in recent times, several artists have courted the notion of the return of black people to the motherland.
A very excited and animated Popcaan made the announcement on his Instagram page yesterday, by posting three video clips as he walked through the hallways of his new home.
“Over Africa wicked man ting. Mi jus buy mi brand new house over Ghana. Yuh haffi have house everyweh!” Popcaan said in one of the clips. In another clip, the Unruly Boss chastised other artistes for only wanting houses in Jamaica.
The Ghanian President, Nana Akufo-Addo, in his visit to Jamaica in June last year had invited Jamaicans to come to the West African country to celebrate the “Year of Return” and commemorate the 400 years since the first African slave was shipped from the country.
Popcaan has jumped on that offer but is it becoming a trend for only the rich and famous to own a piece of that heaven? For more than a decade now, Ghana is home to Rita Marley (wife of the late Jamaica Reggae Icon, Robert Nesta ‘Bob’ Marley), who describes the experience as ‘heaven’. For the better part of 2019, Akon – singer, songwriter and music producer, during 2019 encouraged African-American’s to invest in Ghana – the land of their roots.
Even locally, Jamaica’s prosperity trajectory in 2019 proved to be the testament of a comeback for the real-estate industry. No wonder, celebrities such as Usain Bolt, I-Octane and several others have been seen making vast real-estate investments in recent times. Perhaps, the same is true for Ghana.
