Driving in Ghana is one of the most interesting and yet annoying experience you can ever have. Some situations will bring you to tears while others will make you laugh.
Here are some observations:
1. The Crazy Trotro Driver.
Trotro drivers behave as if he owns the road and will either not give way to other road users or block the road entirely. And when there is a least opportunity, they drive as if they want you dead.
2. The Insult-Expert Trotro Driver.
Trotro driver who has a PHD in insults and will insult any driver or even passenger who dares cross his path. These drivers say some of the most outrageous things. Example; “hw3 nenim s3 hymn book”.
3. The Nose Picker.
When you’re stuck in traffic and you look out your window, you are likely to see that one guy or lady who will be picking their nose and scooping all the debris in there like nobody’s business. Sometimes they look like they are mining for gold in there.
4. The Texter Drivers.
Drivers who start texting whenever the light goes red and when the light goes green, they will still be texting, unless you honk at them.
5. The Picanto or Tico Driver.
These cars are small and so the drivers think they can fit into any available space during traffic so you find that jumping lanes and trying to fit into small spaces in between cars and they are the ones who always end up causing minor accidents such as bumper hits.
6. The Impatient Taxi Driver.
The impatient taxi driver is the worse enemy of the “insult-expert trotro driver” because they are the ones the trotro drivers tailor their insults to. They drive as if they are the only ones who have to get to their destination. They are jumping red lights, they start blowing their horns as soon as the light turns green, they are driving on the shoulder of road to beat traffic etc.
7. The “No-Way” Driver.
Mostly, women, they will never give you space to join the lane when you overtake them in traffic. Even when you’re entering from a junction or you’re even going in the opposite direction, they’ll never give you way.
8. The Boom-Boom Driver.
These are the drivers who have their songs on high volume as if they’re having a party in their vehicle.
9. The Kindergarten Mother Driver.
These are mostly mothers going to pick their kids from school or driving them to school and so you’ll always see toys in their car and they have that sticker that says, “Children onboard”. They are also very good at pleading when they want to join traffic but when they get the chance, they always become point Number 7.
10. The “Culture-Shocked” Tourist.
These are tourists or expatriates who just arrived in the country and are yet to adapt to our system and so they are always jittery on the road and are not used to the harsh attitude of the Ghanaian driver or our driving culture.
11. The Lane Changer.
This guy just doesn’t know that we all have a place to go and so you find them in traffic moving from lane to lane.
